Oh Snaps!

Snaps was the name of the restaurant where we ate on our last night in Iceland, and I just couldn't resist inlcuding it as the title for this post.  So, there you go.  Oh snaps!

Wednesday was a cold, wet and rainy day in Reykjavik, and we were tired and decided to take it easy.  After returning the rental car and heading back to our apartment, we prepared a humble breakfast of some greens with gravlax and gouda, and half a dozen eggs.  Would you just look at those orange yolks!  Icelandic chickens are clearly living and eating well.

We spent some of the afternoon looking for a place to stay in Oslo (our next stop), and sipping coffee at a local cafe.  Feeling energized by late in the day, Ivan thought it would be cool to check out a yoga class at a nearby studio.  I agreed!  We took a ten minute taxi ride to the studio, which we found to have all of the requisite yoga pillows and cushions as shown below.  From the looks of it, they get fairly large classes, but perhaps due to the nasty weather, ours was fairly small at only ten people.

Our teacher of this vinyasa style class taught in Icelandic (naturally), and was kind enough to repeat a lot of the instructions in English for the two of us.  After yoga, it was time to head back to the apartment, shower up and head up to Snaps (only two minutes from our place) for dinner.  Snaps was packed, and they could only accommodate us at the bar.  That was just fine, as we mingled with the bartenders and ended up having a fun time.  Ivan decided to really venture out this time from Arctic Char (which, mind you is like a cross between trout and salmon), and go for the baked salmon.  Only they brought him the wrong dish, so he was forced to try the special, which was a local white fish.  Quite tasty.

I went for the baccala (salted cod) provencal, with potatoes, olives and tomato sauce, and we split an order of lamb meatballs.  The food was really solid, and Snaps didn't let us down.

Because of the mix-up on the order, they brought us a warm brownie with ice cream and chocolate sauce for dessert, and we were not ones to refuse.  When on vacation...

Our flight to Oslo the next morning required a 4:30 am wake up call, and the responsible adults that we are, we headed immediately to Kaffibarinn for a drink.  I mean come on, it was our last night in Iceland; we couldn't just go home.  Besides, it was still light out.  We were in fact fairly responsible though, and called it a night at 12:30 am.  Little did I know, I would not be able to sleep a wink the entire night.  Maybe it was the pre-yoga afternoon coffee that did me in.  We'll never know, but I do know that I saw the sun rise at 4:00 am or so as I packed my bags for the next leg of our Scandinavian journey.
